Why Swedish Buyers Are Flocking to the Costa del Sol
Nueva Andalucía Marbella: Discover the “Little Stockholm” of Costa del Sol
A recent post on the “Little Stockholm” report shines a spotlight on an intriguing trend: Swedish nationals aren’t just buying vacation homes on the Costa del Sol - they’re increasingly making permanent moves. The data reveals a substantial share of property transactions by Swedes, especially concentrated in certain municipalities.

What the Numbers Say
- Over the 12-month period to September 2025, Swedish buyers completed an estimated 1,212 property purchases across five major Costa del Sol municipalities: Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Benahavís and Estepona — a sign that interest is not isolated, but widespread.
- In particular, the postal code 29660 (which includes Nueva Andalucía and Puerto Banús) stands out: there, Swedes are the number-one foreign buyer nationality, accounting for 14% of all foreign transactions in that area — with some 124 sales closed in just one year.
- Breaking down the volume: in Marbella proper around 396 sales to Swedish buyers; in Fuengirola roughly 300; in Mijas and Estepona roughly 220–225; and in Benahavís about 70.
Why we call it a Little Stockholm!
Interestingly, the profile of Swedish buyers is evolving. It’s no longer just retirees seeking the sun - the data suggests a rising number of young families and remote workers are relocating to the Costa del Sol. The draw seems clear: lifestyle, favourable climate, and amenities — including international schooling like the presence of the The Swedish School of Marbella - all build a compelling case for relocating from Sweden to southern Spain.
In short: this is not a fleeting vacation-home trend. Sweden appears to be sending a steady stream of permanent residents to key Costa del Sol municipalities.

What It Means for the Region - and for Future Buyers
- Growing demand from stable, long-term residents — As more families and remote workers relocate, demand dynamics shift: properties are valued not only as holiday retreats, but as full-time homes. This tends to support long-term price stability, community building, and integration.
- Diversification of foreign buyer base — While the Costa del Sol has long attracted buyers from across Europe, seeing a strong representation from Sweden suggests broader geographic diversification. That can reduce volatility tied to any single home-market economy.
- International schooling and infrastructure matter — The success of Swedish buyers gravitates around amenities like the Swedish School of Marbella. For any international buyer or family considering relocation, access to familiar education and community infrastructure seems to play a major role.
- Potential competitive market — With almost 1,200 Swedish transactions in a year, competition for desirable properties could intensify — especially in “hot postal codes” like 29660. That means timing and local knowledge may matter more than ever.
My Take as a broker here in Costa del Sol
The “Little Stockholm” is todays version of "Nueva Estocolmo" that was a fictional town in Gran Canaria back in 1980´s when the swedes learned about Charter and Spain in the best way possible from the movie "Sällskapsresan". It shows that Spain’s Costa del Sol is evolving beyond seasonal tourism and holiday homes - it’s becoming a destination for families and remote workers from Northern Europe seeking a different kind of life: one that combines Mediterranean climate, international community, education, and lifestyle.
As this trend continues, real-estate professionals, buyers, and policymakers should take note: we’re not just talking about short-term investments or holiday villas. We may be witnessing a lasting demographic shift, one that reshapes the composition, demand and character of residential markets along the Costa del Sol.
As a broker here at Costa del Sol and in Nueva Andalucia i have seen the community grow during the last 10 years and it will continue to attract foreign buyers, not only from Sweden and other scandinavian countries for many years ahead.
