Little venice of Costa del Sol
Benalmádena is set on the Costa del Sol in Málaga province, just 20 km from Málaga city and 15 minutes from the airport. The municipality is made up of three areas: the traditional whitewashed village of Benalmádena Pueblo in the hills, the bustling Arroyo de la Miel with shops and train links, and Benalmádena Costa with its beaches and Puerto Marina.
Bordering Torremolinos to the east and Fuengirola to the west, it combines authentic Andalusian charm with modern attractions like the Butterfly Park, Tivoli World, and the striking Buddhist Stupa, making it one of the coast’s most versatile destinations.

Benalmádena has three distinct zones, each with its own character. Benalmádena Costa nestles the coastline along the beachfront, lively and with panoramic views. Arroyo de la Miel is a bustling town with shops, cafés, parks, and excellent transport links. And Benalmádena Pueblo, slightly inland, is a fairy-tale whitewashed town that maintains the spirit of old Andalusia, with flower-bedecked balconies, cobbled streets, and breathtaking coastal views.
This rare combination of new buildings, local culture, and natural scenery makes Benalmádena one of the Costa del Sol's most attractive towns to reside in.
Benalmádena is a town in contrasts that offers both a classic Andalusian pueblo in the hills and an exciting coastal resort by the sea. Benalmádena Pueblo, with its whitewashed villages, cobbled streets, and flower-filled squares, enjoys sweeping views of the Mediterranean and traditional Spanish atmosphere. Down at the sea front, Benalmádena Costa offers golden sandy beaches, bustling promenade, and the famous Puerto Marina, full of yachts, shops, and cosmopolitan eateries.
This dual identity is what makes Benalmádena so appealing—to enjoy a tranquil morning walking along centuries-old plazas and within 15 minutes be relaxing on a sun lounger or driving to Malaga airport. Families particularly appreciate the mix of lifestyles that is offered, with the likes of Tivoli World theme park and Sea Life aquarium offering something for all the family.
Benalmádena boasts an outstandingly diverse restaurant culture, thanks to its cosmopolitan community and culinary heritage. Along the bustling Puerto Marina, you'll find anything from classic Andalusian seafood to Italian, Indian, Asian fusion, and South American cuisine. El Mero, Toro Puerto Marina, and Jacks Smokehouse restaurants boast lively environments with sea vistas.
For something more peaceful, La Viborilla is a quiet chiringuito hidden away among the pine and rock of the coast, famous for its paellas and sunsets. In Benalmádena Pueblo, restaurants like El Muro and El Higuerón dish up gourmet Mediterranean food in beautiful elevated settings with long views over the coast.
The town is also filled with cosy tapas bars, cafes, and bakeries that lend a local flavor to everyday life, especially in Arroyo de la Miel where locals meet up for relaxed coffees and long lunches.

Benalmádena is especially popular with families because it has safe streets, a community feel, and plenty of activities for kids. Parque de la Paloma is one such standout—an immense, spotlessly maintained park featuring lakes, animal enclosures, and adventure playgrounds. Adjacent to it is Selwo Marina, with dolphin and penguin displays that excite younger viewers.
Travel by cable car to Monte Calamorro and go hiking, watch falconry displays, and stroll along hill-tops at the weekend. The Sea Life Aquarium and summer beach activities, for example, beach festivals, parades, and concerts, keep the local diary filled with things to do for all families.
Benalmádena boasts a strong private and public school system, making it a wise choice for local and expat families. The best school among them is The British College of Benalmádena, which follows a UK-based curriculum from early years through A-levels with excellent results and a caring school community.
Colegio Maravillas, within walking distance, offers bilingual schooling and a good reputation for modern education and local outreach. Montessori and international nursery schools, and also good reputation public Spanish schools, abound in the town.
The location of Benalmádena also ensures easy accessibility to the best schools in Málaga, Fuengirola, and even Marbella, with daily transport arrangements made available for higher graded students.
Benalmádena is a haven for sporty people, with an amazing selection of sports clubs, fitness gyms, and open areas. The Polideportivo Municipal de Benalmádena has paddle and tennis courts, swimming pools, indoor football grounds, and group classes for adults and kids. Fitness clubs like Viding Benalmádena and Anytime Fitness are modern, well-equipped, and city-centre located.
Sailing, diving, paddleboarding, and kayaking are all available directly from the marina. Seafront promenades greet joggers and cyclists every day, and the surrounding mountains offer walking and cycle paths with stunning scenery. Pilates and yoga studios are scattered throughout the town, and many wellness-oriented retreats are also being held in Benalmádena Pueblo.
For golfers, the world-renowned Torrequebrada Golf Club is just a few minutes away and boasts a well-supplied, demanding course with a great clubhouse. Several other of the top courses—Mijas Golf, Chaparral, and Lauro Golf—are all within a 20-minute journey.
Benalmádena is extremely well supplied in terms of medicine. Hospital Vithas Xanit Internacional in Arroyo de la Miel is one of the top private Costa del Sol hospitals, and it is known for its multilingual staff, extensive services, and higher level of care.
To supplement Xanit, Hospital de Alta Resolución also boasts good public healthcare, with numerous family clinics, pharmacies, and dentists dotted throughout the region. It gives residents peace of mind that first-rate medical care is within their reach at all times.
Whether you’re browsing for daily essentials or indulging in a bit of retail therapy, Benalmádena covers all bases. Arroyo de la Miel is full of shops, convenience stores, and supermarkets like Mercadona and Carrefour, while Benalmádena Costa offers fashion boutiques, beachwear shops, and artisanal markets.
For more extensive shopping, Plaza Mayor Shopping Park is a 15-minute drive and has international brand names, home furniture stores, and a cinema complex. Puerto Marina's fashionable quarter also has exclusive boutiques and gift shops perfect for a one-of-a-kind purchase.
At Serneholt Estate, we’re consistently impressed by Benalmádena’s ability to tick so many boxes for such a wide range of clients. Families love the balance of nature, culture, and convenience. Retirees appreciate the walkability, the healthcare, and the vibrant social life. Investors see the consistent demand for rental properties thanks to year-round tourism, international schools, and commuter connections to Málaga.
Most of all, Benalmádena offers true Mediterranean living—with none of the madness and all of the ambiance.
