Los Abrigos – Seafood Soul with Coastal Heritage

On the south-east coast of Tenerife, Los Abrigos is a charming fishing village that has managed to retain its genuine Canarian character while offering residents and visitors alike a peaceful seaside lifestyle. Renowned for its harbour of working fishermen, fresh seafood, and colourfully coloured sunsets over the Atlantic, it's somewhere the pace slows down, the neighbourhood's tight-knit, and the sea never further than a few feet away.

Location & Lifestyle: Where Is Los Abrigos?

Los Abrigos is only 10 minutes from Tenerife South Airport, and it is one of the island's most conveniently placed towns along its coastline. Located between El Médano and Golf del Sur, it offers a serene, historic centre that is still within easy reach of lively beaches, golf courses, and modern facilities. Days there might begin with a walk along the miniature marina, doing some interviewing with the local fishermen as they unload their day's haul, followed by a linger in a water-front café. Walking along the sea path at sundown time is recommended by many of the locals, where the sun will set squarely into the horizon, and golden light will descend over the harbour and adjacent coves.

Eating: Fresh from the Sea

The village restaurant culture is famous all over Tenerife for its sea food—catch of the day and typically served within hours. Terraces are facing the Atlantic as restaurants line the coast. Restaurante Los Abrigos is popular among locals for its seafood and fish platters, where people can choose their fish directly from the counter before it is cooked to absolute perfection. A further favourite is Perlas del Mar, which has sea views, friendly staff, and a delicious menu full of Canarian favourites like papas arrugadas with mojo rojo.

Shopping: Local and Simple

Shopping in Los Abrigos remains low-key and cozy, with minimarkets, bakeries, and small boutiques scattered around the village. Tuesday evenings find the weekly market take over the central plaza with fresh fruits and vegetables, crafted goods, and island cheeses on offer from stalls—a great time to stock up on supplies while having a relaxed evening's socializing.

Healthcare: Convenient and Accessible

Whilst Los Abrigos itself has pharmacies and mini-medical centres for everyday needs, extended medical care is available a few minutes away in San Isidro or Los Cristianos. Hospiten Sur, with its multilingual staff and high-quality services, is just a short drive away and offers peace of mind for residents and newcomers alike.

Education: Community and International Options

The village also has a community primary school that offers a welcoming, community environment for younger children. For international or bilingual education, families are just a 20–25 minute drive from Costa Adeje International School or Wingate School, so Los Abrigos is a quiet but convenient place to raise a family.

Sports & Outdoor Living: Shore to Sea

The location is perfect for those who enjoy living outdoors. The peaceful harbour is ideal for paddleboarding and kayaking, and the waters surrounding it are ideal for snorkelling and diving because of their sea life and clarity. Golfers are just minutes from Amarilla Golf and Golf del Sur's fairways, and wind surfing and kite surfing can be accessed within minutes in El Médano. Locals recommend taking a kayak hire from the marina direct out for an early morning paddle along the volcanic shore before the afternoon breeze gets up.

Family Life: Safe, Welcoming, and Walkable

Los Abrigos is extremely walkable with safe streets, a friendly community, and plenty of open spaces for children to play. Afternoons are spent by the small beach or at the seaside promenade, and in the evening later, dining together in one of the many seafood restaurants. The sense of neighbourliness here makes it the ideal place for families who value both safety and community.
